Lumbar Spine: Evidence-Based Assessment and Management
Course Overview
Course Overview
This module offers a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to assessing and managing low back pain (LBP) and lumbar spine dysfunctions. It covers clinical examination techniques, mobilization and active range of motion (AROM) exercises, spinal manipulation strategies, lumbar traction, and repeated motion examinations. The course also addresses specific conditions such as lumbar spinal stenosis and includes upper motor neuron screening, providing a holistic framework for effective patient care.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this 1-credit module, participants will be able to:
-
Perform thorough clinical assessments of the lumbopelvic region to identify pain patterns and dysfunctions.
-
Apply evidence-based mobilization and AROM techniques to improve joint function and reduce pain.
-
Implement spinal manipulation strategies to address musculoskeletal dysfunctions.
-
Utilize lumbar traction and repeated motion examinations to alleviate pressure on spinal structures and assess symptom responses.
-
Conduct evaluations for lumbar spinal stenosis and perform upper motor neuron screening to identify neurological impairments.
Chapters & Learning Objectives

Chapter 1- Introduction to Low Back Pain Patterns & Lumbopelvic Region
: 00:12 Hour
This chapter introduces low back pain (LBP) and explores the different pain patterns associated with the lumbopelvic region. It covers the anatomy and mechanics of the lower back and pelvis, helping to identify the primary causes of pain, including mechanical, neurogenic, and inflammatory issues.

Clinical Practical Guidelines & Examination of Lumbopelvic Region
: 00:14 Hour
This chapter provides clinical guidelines for assessing patients with LBP, emphasizing the examination of the lumbopelvic region. It also provided the basis for planning the orthopaedic examination.

Chapter 3: Evidence-Based Management for Low Back Pain (Mobilisation and AROM Techniques)
: 00:09 Hour
This chapter explores evidence-based management approaches for LBP, focusing on mobilization techniques to improve joint function and reduce pain. It also covers Active Range of Motion (AROM) exercises designed to enhance mobility, strengthen the muscles of the lumbopelvic region, and promote recovery.

Chapter 4: Manipulation Techniques for Low Back Pain & Lower Quarter Scanning
: 00:12 Hour
This chapter discusses spinal manipulation techniques used to treat low back pain, focusing on methods that address musculoskeletal dysfunction. It also introduces lower quarter scanning, which involves examining the hips, knees, and ankles to identify referred pain or dysfunction that may influence the low back.

Chapter 5: Lumbar Traction and Repeated Motion Examination
: 00:16 Hour
This chapter focuses on the use of lumbar traction to relieve pressure on spinal structures and alleviate low back pain. It also covers repeated motion examinations to assess how specific movements impact symptoms, helping to determine effective treatment strategies based on patient responses.

Chapter 6: Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Examination and Upper Motor Neuron Screening
: 00:15 Hour
