ADOLESCENT IDIOPATHIC SCOLIOSIS: MANAGEMENT AND EXERCISES

Course Overview

Course Overview

This module focuses on evidence-based strategies for managing adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, with emphasis on scoliosis-specific exercises and therapeutic interventions. Participants will explore targeted exercise protocols (side-bending, rotation, core strengthening, stretching), manual therapy techniques, heel lifts, and self-correction methods (such as the Schroth method). Through these methods, learners will gain the skills to design personalized programs aimed at improving alignment, function, and patient outcomes.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this 1-credit module, participants will be able to:

  • Apply physiologic scoliosis-specific exercises (including side-bending, rotation, core work, and stretching) in clinical practice.

  • Integrate manual therapy techniques along with adjuncts such as heel lifts when appropriate.

  • Employ self-correction strategies (e.g. from the Schroth method) to encourage active patient engagement in alignment.

  • Understand foundational (entry-level) concepts in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis to support effective application of interventions.

Chapters & Learning Objectives

CHAPTER 1: PSSE: PHYSIOLOGIC SCOLIOSIS SPECIFIC EXERCISES (SIDE-BENDING, ROTATION, CORE STRENGTHENING AND STRETCHING)
: 00:07 Hour

In this chapter, we will delve into targeted exercise strategies aimed at managing scoliosis effectively. Focusing on side-bending, rotation, core strengthening, and stretching, we will explore how each of these components plays a critical role in improving spinal alignment and overall function.

CHAPTER-2: PSSE- MANUAL THERAPY, USE OF HEEL LIFTS AND SELF CORRECTION METHODS (SCHROTH METHOD)
: 00:08 Hour

We will discuss the role of manual therapy in alleviating discomfort and improving mobility, alongside the application of heel lifts to address leg length discrepancies and their impact on spinal alignment. Additionally, we will introduce self-correction techniques rooted in the Schroth Method, focusing on posture awareness and active participation in correction.

CHAPTER-3: ENTRY LEVEL CONCEPTS FOR ADOLESCENT IDIOPATHIC SCOLIOSIS
: 00:03 Hour

In this lecture,  we will cover foundational knowledge essential for understanding and addressing adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.By the end of the session, attendees will be equipped with the essential concepts needed to provide effective care for adolescents with scoliosis.
